Cool, assured and masculine, the colour grey always has a place in our wardrobe in its various guises, from dove to charcoal. While a grey flannel suit or slate-coloured cashmere knit is always welcome, the matter of interest this week is grey accessories. They’re great because they go with everything and look good with all other colours, working subtly to complete your overall outfit. And on a purely practical note, you don’t have to exercise the same degree of caution with them as you do with, say, a white bag or sand-coloured scarf: you’ll be able to take spaghetti Bolognese and crayon-brandishing toddlers in your stride. Click through the gallery, below, to see some of our favourite grey accessories this season – as you will notice, there is actually nothing drab or “grey” about them at all.
OR TRY THESE…
TURNBULL & ASSER
Off-white polka dots add a light-hearted accent to Turnbull & Asser‘s grey silk handkerchief. Slip it into the chest pocket of a well-cut blazer to display your impeccable attention to detail.
CUTLER AND GROSS
Crafted in Cadore, Italy, Cutler and Gross‘ grey acetate sunglasses offer a sophisticated way to shield yourself from the sun. This versatile pair features oval vintage pins and hand-drilled hinges and will look exceptionally dashing with a white polo shirt and tailored shorts.
Bottega Veneta introduced its intrecciato leather-weaving method in the late 1960s, and now the iconic technique has been translated to other fabrics including this wool scarf. Let the knitted interlacing add texture to a tailored overcoat. Shown here with a Paul Smith shirt, a Bottega Veneta suit and shoes, a Gucci tie and an Etro pocket square.
Crafted from soft brushed-lambswool, Acne‘s scaled-up scarf is an understated way to update your cold-weather outfits. Use the snug oversized design to offset the structure of a boxy leather bomber jacket. Shown here with an Acne sweater, blazer and jeans and A.P.C. boots.
THE ELDER STATESMAN
Founder of The Elder Statesman, Mr Greg Chait, believes “cashmere is one of those precious raw materials to which we are naturally, instinctively drawn”, and this thick ribbed-knit beanie hat exemplifies his passion for this luxurious fabric. Crafted in the USA using the brand’s specially sourced fibres, it is unbeatably soft and warm. The generous size will ensure you stay snug in understated style through the coldest months.
