Grab Life by the Hornitos® — Celebrate Mardi Gras at Home with Your “Krewe”

During early Mardi Gras celebrations, masks were a way for their wearers or “revelers” to escape class constraints and social demands of the time. Mask wearers could mingle with people of different classes and be whomever they desired, at least for a few days. In New Orleans, float riders are required by law to wear a mask. On Fat Tuesday, however, masking is legal for all Mardi Gras attendees too – although many storeowners post signs asking those entering to please remove their masks, you can “revel” at your own freewill at home!

Flambeaux, meaning flame-torch, is the tradition of people carrying shredded rope soaked in pitch through the streets so that nighttime revelers can enjoy festivities after dark. They were originally carried by slaves and free African Americans trying to earn a little money. Crowds tossed coins at the torch carriers for lighting the way for the floats. Today, the flambeaux carriers have turned the tradition into something of a performance. Honor these traditions by tipping those who’re putting on the event, or be a good host and ensure all the bases are covered for a long and prosperous night ahead!

What would Mardi Gas be without ‘social lubrication’ to ease you into the forthcoming celebrations? New Orleans famed cocktails include the Hurricane, Sazerac, and Mimosa. Having a quality tequila, a bar staple, on hand ensures that many cocktails may be consumed responsibly throughout Carnival. Hornitos® Plata is made from the freshest of Blue Agave and exudes smoothness with hints of clove and floral spices. The purest of expressions, Hornitos® signature cultivated yeast and sealed production system ensures that Hornitos® Plata retains its unique agave flavor and is perfect for those seeking to Grab Life by the Hornitos®.
