How Often Do You Change Your Razor Blade?

It is not always easy to decipher when to change your razor blade.  Every week?  Every month?  Every year, even?  In fact, there are no specific rules for when you should change your razor blade.  It all depends on how fast your hair grows, how often you shave, how many areas of your body you shave and so on.

Everyone has their own way of deciphering when it is time to change their razor blade, but the best way to tell when to change blades is to be sensitive as to when your blade starts to feel dull.

Tips for changing your blade

  • One way to tell it is time to change blades is if you feel any pulling.  If it feels as if your razor is pulling your hair when you shave, it is time to switch blades.  If it doesn’t glide across your skin, it’s time to dispose of it.
  • Clean the hair out of your razor with a brush after every few shaves.  Never clean it out with your fingers (for obvious reasons).  Rinse the blade under warm water after brushing it out.  This will make the blade last a lot longer.
  • Make sure you let your razor blade air dry after cleaning it!  If you ever see any rust on your razor blade, make sure you replace it immediately.
  • You may be able to use one blade for over six months.  It all depends on your brand, length of hair, etc etc etc.  If all you shave is your facial hair, and you only shave it every few days, for example, you probably don’t need to change blades often.

In case you weren’t aware, shaving with a dull blade will invite cuts, nicks and rashes.  Please be careful.  Again, if you do not feel your blade is gliding across whatever area you are shaving or if you feel even the slightest pull, it’s time for a new one.

Bottom line:  There is no rule for changing your blade.  At the least, you should change the trim guide(s) once per year, and the inner blade every two years.
