Roger Federer & Mercedes-Benz Show What Timeless Greatness Looks Like

We often think that greatness is something that happens in an upward curve, where you bounce from goal to goal in perfect synchronicity, before reaching the dithering heights of success. Many guys are surprised to learn that, in fact, success looks more like an earthquake reading than a staircase; it takes lots of ups and downs to get to the top.

This is why we love the hilarious new Mercedes-Benz video featuring Roger Federer on “undisputed greatness.” Rather than being stuck on each step, they take in the bigger picture and appreciate that our stops can be detrimental to our success. It can be tempting to take the easy but, but rather than seeing a setback as wasted time, take a leaf of our Rogers book and see it an an opportunity to power up.

When Roger comes back, he is going to be faster and stronger than ever before. He will not let an injury hold him back. Check out what this awesome collaboration has to offer. We think you might learn a thing or two about your own journey. Don’t forget to let us know what you think below!

Don’t Dispute Your Greatness

Roger Federer won’t be playing the rest of 2016. However, that doesn’t negate the fact that he is one of the tennis’ greatest athletes in the world. He’s a timeless legend, much like the Mercedes SL. And he won’t be using his pause to dwell, either. In fact, he is using this time to reevaluate his next step to make it big.

Mercedes-Benz USA’s YouTube channel just released Roger Federer and the SL. Timeless Legends, a fun video that looks back at the iconic eras of tennis and how the SL was along for the ride. The quirky campaign also features Rod Laver and Bill Macatee, as they celebrate Roger as one of the best performers in the history of tennis, alongside the gorgeous 2017 Mercedes-Benz SL convertible.

First, through the clever use of CGI and editing trickery, Federer is transported back to the era of tennis icon Rod Laver. Federer cuts a striking figure in the grainy black-and-white footage, driving a gorgeous red Mercedes 300SL Roadster through the streets of Paris. In the vid, he meets and “plays” Laver, who commends him on both his talent and his car.

Next, Federer hops forward to the 1980s, where he displays some outbursts characteristic of John McEnroe. The svelte 300SL is now a elegant W113 Pagoda from the 1970s. Finally, It’s the 1980s, with Federer donning Agassi’s trademark mullet. The simple and unadorned W113 Pagoda is now a clean-cut and handsome R107 SL.

“By putting Roger in an inherently sharable, fully digital campaign, preceded by a week of teasers on MBUSA’s social channels, we hope to provide some entertainment for tennis fans and pique interest in our own icon among social- and digital-first consumers,” said Mark Aikman, general manager of marketing at Mercedes-Benz USA, in a statement.

In the end, we see Federer climb behind the wheel of the brand new SL, in this case the refreshed and facelifted 2017 Mercedes-AMG SL63. The shot closes with Federer, now as himself, driving the roadster down a coastal road. The 2016 U.S. Open runs from Aug. 29 to Sept. 11. Mr. Federer will not be competing this year because of an injury.
